The Chase (Arthur Ripley, 1946)

A pretty long way from a noir of the first rank - ultimately it's in the "silly dream/amnesia" subgenre, and there are deficiencies of script and performance as well as plotting - but nonetheless this very much has its moments. Some of its transitions and odd moments of stasis are genuinely peculiar and manage simultaneously to generate an intriguing mood without one being at all sure exactly what kind of intriguing mood. Unfortunately the best stuff is pretty front-loaded, so there is quite a bit of a falling-off; but then how many other films can we also say that about?
