Murder, My Sweet (Edward Dmytryk, 1944)

Absolutely tremendous - great performances and photography, a decent dose of double entendre, and plenty of satisfying confusion. Certainly finer than the later Robert Mitchum version of the same novel. I might even be inclined to say this is of Big Sleep quality if that didn't feel a little disloyal...
