To Sleep With Anger (Charles Burnett, 1990)

Centering around Danny Glover's delectably devilish performance, this tale of an return from the past that almost unleashes mayhem (which is also a return of a different class, and of a different place, namely the South) is delightful from start to finish. Wonderful to see so much attention paid to older actors - let alone older women, and older African American women at that - but not because it ticks any boxes, just because they fully merit the attention. Just occasionally a scene dips into straightforward soap opera (the father and younger son arguing then grudgingly shaking hands outside the house during the party), but this doesn't hurt anything because these moments are surrounded by scenes with so much else going on, from the apparently telegraphed plot moves that don't happen the way you think they will, to the quietly wry humour throughout.
