mid90s (Jonah Hill, 2018)

Though it's ultimately pretty conventional, the child actors are endearing but not always wholly convincing, and I could have done without so many claustrophobic close-ups, mid90s is also very hard to dislike. The transitions between the light material and the supposedly shocking or traumatic moments can feel forced, and I don't think anyone is likely to think they've learned anything from the film, but the genuine feeling behind it comes through loud and clear. And it doesn't outstay its welcome, which is always a big plus in my book.
